Consultations are $150 an hour, including driving time from Falmouth, ME. Typically an hour is spent on site. During this time our clients are provided with expert advice, on-the-spot problem solving, and recommendations for what can be done with or without our assistance. If you are new to your home and would like to know about the plants you have, take notes! Andrew will identify the plants on your property (whether they are planted or occur naturally in the woods or periphery of your yard) and offer insights about bloom-time, fall color, form, edibility, potential issues, etc. Beyond the botany lesson, we can leave you with specific horticultural instructions on how to properly prune, cut back, transplant, and otherwise nurture what you have. If you are interested in stonework we will collaborate with you on ways to effectively use the space to achieve your goals, while calculating the surface area or linear feet involved in order to provide estimates. Our working knowledge of available materials allows us to make recommendations for the type(s) of stone that will best suite your home and blend most seamlessly with the overall character of your property. We are accomplished problem solvers in the landscape and are constantly generating creative options to remedy, improve, or begin anew with your space.
*We are booked solid for the 2023 season. We are taking on new clients and can begin the design process immediately, but won’t be breaking ground until on new projects until mid-season of 2024. More often than not, our landscapes are completed in phases over 2 or more years. Typically stonework is tackled first, in mid- to late-season. We focus almost exclusively on our gardens in spring and aim to have all new plantings in the ground by the end of June. This approach works great for us, breaks up the expense for our clients, and has proven invaluable.
Establishing our gardens early means has many benefits: Any existing transplants are much more likely to survive the move, tender perennials are less likely get burnt in the heat of summer, trees and shrubs don’t survive winter’s wrath, the plants we use are not stressed out and rootbound as they are tend to be later in the season. In short, everything is given a time to establish roots and thrive into the next season.
Furthermore, during the days or weeks we spend on site building stone features we are gaining an intimate knowledge of your property. Easily overlooked considerations (i.e. soil composition, aspect, sun and wind exposure, viewpoints from windows in the house, privacy from neighbors or roads, natural circulation patterns, the presence wildlife we may want to attract or deter, etc) become clear and we are better able to generate solutions to problems and consider the most suitable planting options for the spaces we are creating. Our planting plans often change or are intentionally left vague to allow for flexibility based on our observations while working in the landscape. We lean into the fact that the most satisfying gardens take time, and are best achieved through an adaptive, ever-evolving approach.*
